Philosophy of Education……..

My philosophy of education has been evolving since my first day in methods at Northern Michigan University.  However, I don’t see that as something that is bad.  I truly believe that a teacher’s philosophy of education should always be changing.  A teacher’s job is to continuously inform themselves of new technology or innovations that will encourage learning in the classroom.

I believe that every student has the ability to accomplish any goal that is set for them as long as the learning has a connection to them.  Children need to feel connected to the materials or their interest is lost forever.  According to the Jean Piaget theory of development and learning, a child who is developing builds cognitive structures, which connect previous knowledge and/or experiences to the new knowledge.  That connection increases the student understands and responsiveness to his/her environment.

A teacher needs to have positive expectations.  This is represented by believing in every student and believing every student can learn and be successful.  Teachers need to set high expectations for the children in order to reach their highest learning potential.  Students can accomplish great things when their teacher truly believes in them and sees what amazing individuals they are.  Education is about taking risks, making mistakes, learning along the way and having a great time doing it.
